Okay, Iâll admit it. Iâm a loot goblin when it comes to RPGs. Especially Skyrim.
A majority of the items you pick up in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are pretty useless, letâs face it. If itâs not a powerful weapon or strong piece of armour, then itâs a random bit of houseware clutter, a quest item you have no idea what to do with, or a piece of food youâll end up leaving uneaten in your inventory until the end of the game.
Despite knowing this, Iâll still pick up everything that I come across in every Skyrim dungeon, house, or shop even though itâs basically useless. Thatâs my biggest weakness in RPGs.
So, when I saw this new mod uploaded to the Skyrim hub on Nexus Mods last week, I was scared at the monster I was about to become.
Detailed Minimap is the Skyrim mod for loot goblins like me
Detailed Minimap adds a brand new minimap to Skyrim that sits in the corner of your screen, tracking your every movement within each cell of the game world. Itâs a pretty unobtrusive mod thatâs there when you need it, but you can ignore it when you donât want it.

In one way, this makes it one of the best Skyrim mods for me, as it allows me to keep track of my whereabouts on-screen at all times. Considering how much I dislike the local map in Skyrim (which is not as useful as people would have you believe), itâs nice to finally have a way to track this while playing.

However, another major aspect of the mod has completely enabled my loot goblin behaviour for the worse, as it tracks every single piece of loot on the map that Iâm able to pick up.
The minimap features icons for different items I can pick up on the map, with unique images for each item type. There are also markers for doors and chests which might come in handy too.
The mod is highly customisable, which displays any in-game models and represents them on-screen for you to navigate your way around the various parts of Skyrimâs world. You can pretty much enable or disable everything to your liking.
This extends to being able to customise how the icons function, including being able to disable them outright (which, I realise, would fix my loot goblin problem. But knowing itâs there makes it very tempting to just keep active at all times).
And of course, since itâs a hot topic at the moment, the mod also includes a quest beacon and beam which guides you to your next objective. Not something you need to have active if you want to keep an aura of mystery about your quests.
Altogether, the mod definitely adds something for those who want a little more of a guided experience, and for those of you like me who often get lost within Skyrimâs towns and dungeons, or simply want to start hoarding loot again like a dragon, it should provide you with a new means of doing so.
