Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Just Narrowed Down Its Release Window, Oh Boy

It will be a few years yet

With Cyberpunk 2077 now widely being regarded as one of the best RPG releases of all time, it is no wonder that fans are eager for regular updates on its highly anticipated sequel.

Announced back in 2022 under the codename ‘Project Orion’, Cyberpunk 2 is officially in development over at CD Projekt RED.

However, with the Poland-based studio also working on The Witcher 4, it may be a while until fans can return to the neon-soaked streets of Night City.

Now according to a recent video showcasing CD Projekt RED’s Q3 2025 financial report, Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel will not arrive before 2028 at the earliest.

This news comes after the studio unveiled some exciting news: Cyberpunk 2077 has sold a staggering 35 million copies since it was first launched, in somewhat of a sorry state, back in 2020.

Since its rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has gone from strength to strength thanks to regular updates, patches, and its award-winning Phantom Liberty DLC.

However, according to the recent update video, there is still quite some time until we can get our hands on that sequel.

It's Not All Doom and Gloom

Nevertheless, there is also good news.

CD Projekt RED’s CFO Piotr Nielubowicz revealed that Cyberpunk 2 now has 135 employees working on the sequel full time.

As a result, full-scale production is set to begin in late 2026, early 2027 with over 400 developers expected to be working on it during this time.

With The Witcher 4 expected to launch first, it makes sense that Cyberpunk 2 is not expected for a few more years at least and although it is quite a wait, it is reassuring to know that development is still coming along smoothly.

After all, we do not want a repeat of Cyberpunk 2077’s initial launch.

Following the brand-new update, fans of the RPG took to social media to share their thoughts.

“I hope they add everything they promised for the first one,” one user shared.

“Cutscenes where you see your character, potential third person, the metal blade arms you can climb with, longer storylines with characters that don’t just end in one mission. Decisions that ripple throughout the game. I mean…just like Witcher 3.”

Another wrote, “I think now CD won't commit the same mistake again. The game will launch when it's ready. Be it 2029, 2031, 2032. Better than releasing in 2028 missing half of promised features and just being playable two years later.”

So there you have it, Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel will not be released until 2028 at the earliest but let us just hope that its launch will be a lot smoother this time around.
