Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has decided against bringing back a rather unpopular feature from previous games in the series.
Nobody hates Call of Duty more than Call of Duty fans, but one feature that pretty much everyone agreed was a bit rubbish was the fact that you needed a persistent online connection at all times, even when playing offline.
More recent games in the series such as Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 have required online connections when accessing their campaigns, something that proved to be very frustrating at times.
As reported by IGN, Infinity Ward has confirmed that an online connection won't be required to access the campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

This was frustrating for many reasons, but a major one was due to the fact that dropping connection at any time during the campaign would kick you out, even if you were playing alone.
Another problem with it was due to the fact that if your connection was a little spotty, you'd experience server lag in the campaign where enemies would bug out or you'd experience other timeout issues.
This was a game being sold for $70, mind you.
Thankfully, with the news that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be playable offline, it should be a relief to those with uneven connections that you'll be able to experience the campaign with relatively few issues.

IGN has also confirmed that Infinity Ward is looking to address the fact that the game client needs to restart after every update.
This is a problem that has been in the game for the last six years or so, where you'd download an update on your PC or console home screen, and then have to load up the game and restart it once the update applied.
It was a minor inconvenience, but annoying enough that it bothered a lot of players.
Ultimately, it should mean players have a better time when launching the game, with a frustration-free load in each time they want to play.
In related news, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not have immersion-breaking skins in multiplayer, which has been a problem players have had with the game over the last few years.
"No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts," the Call of Duty team promised.
It's clear this move may be a response to Battlefield 6's pledge to have grounded and realistic skins available in the game, rather than silly collaborations that ruin the immersion and break the fantasy that the game sets up.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will release on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 on 23 October, 2026.
