Social media can mostly be a wonderful place for people from all across the world and of all backgrounds to get together to share common interests. It’s also a fantastic tool to get to know a little more about your favourite celebrities as they open up the door ever so slightly, giving a glimpse of their lives (or some would want you to believe).

Sadly, it can also be a toxic place of abuse, bullying and stupid social media challenges gone wrong. As reported by Dexerto, one such challenge involves a 13-year-old boy named Dzhyan Crutcher.

When a storm threatened to hit their town which could result in a power cut, mother Tiffany Crutcher placed a series of candles around the home in preparation. However, her son took this opportunity to take part in a dangerous social media challenge, involving throwing alcohol over a burning flame.

“He [Dzhyan reportedly] went into the bathroom and he took a candle and poured alcohol onto it,” Tiffany told Kennedy News & Media, in a statement as per the NYP. “It exploded onto him, catching him on fire. I was there immediately. I heard the explosion.”

As a result of the silly social media challenge, Dzhyan received third and second-degree burns to his face, chest as well as stomach. I can only imagine how much of a nightmare it must have been for the mother.

I tried to put him out with my hands at first,” she explained. “We were taught to stop, drop and roll, so I tried that, and it didn’t work… He was completely on fire from the waist up. It was terrifying.” Thankfully, Dzhyan’s youngest brother was quick thinking by handing his mother a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, though a lot of damage was already done.

Just a heads up, I’m about to go into dad mode right now, so be warned. I know kids can do silly things, we’ve all been there before, but any social media challenge involving fire and alcohol is never going to end well

Thankfully, Dzhyan’s injuries are not worse than they could have been. I know it can be tempting to buckle to social pier pressure, but just examine any situation and think about what could go wrong, because there’s a good chance that it will. We’re just glad, all things considered, that Dzhyan is ok as he can be.
