Black fans are still desperate for a sequel, 17 years on

Criterion's iconic FPS Black was first released in 2006, and after all this time, fans still want to see a sequel.

It may have been 17 years since its release, but fans of the 2006 first-person shooter BLACK are still begging for a sequel.

In case you were unfamiliar, the game, which was first released on the PS2 and original Xbox, followed the tale of Jack Kellar, a member of the CIA’s black ops team. After being captured and interrogated, Jack is forced to reveal the actions that he’d been taking against a terrorist organisation known as Seventh Wave. The game itself then follows the events that took place prior to his capture.

BLACK was published by EA, the publisher behind Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is releasing later this month. Take a look at the trailer below.

Anyway, it was (and still is) a seriously good game, and fans on Reddit are back at it again praying for a new instalment to see what happens next. “Anyone remember this game?” one user wrote, along with a screenshot of the box art. “I wish it had a sequel.”

Everyone is fully on board: “BLACK was freaking awesome. I remember being amazed at how good the game looked for its time. It was just incredible to me,” one user replied. “This was the best shooter on PS2 in my opinion and it’s sad that not many people recognised that the systems in this game were revolutionary[,] and there was little handholding like we have in a lot of modern video games,” added another.

Sadly, it was revealed last year that plans for a BLACK sequel did once exist, but were ultimately scrapped. Apparently, due to the amount of shooter games that were already out there on the market, combined with the fact that developers Criterion were busy at the time working on Burnout Paradise, the devs ultimately decided against it.

So, that sucks. Perhaps if there’s enough demand, those same plans could eventually be picked back up? We can only hope.
