The latest BioShock announcement thankfully confirms that a previously announced project is thankfully still in development, even if said project has been noticeably downgraded.

After being previously revealed back in February 2022, news of Netflix's adaptation of Irrational Games' 2007 title BioShock has since been a little sparse.

We do have an update however, and the news comes from its producer Roy Lee. Lee announced that the film was currently being "reconfigured" to work on a smaller budget, during Collider’s Producers on Producers panel at San Diego Comic Con.

“The new regime has lowered the budgets... So we’re doing a much smaller version", Lee stated during the panel. "It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.”

Even with the reduced budget, director Francis Lawrence (best known for his work on The Hunger Games films and the 2007 movie I Am Legend) is still attached to direct.

As confirmed yesterday by Variety's Adam B. Vary, Lee specified that the production changes are a result of Netflix's new "compensation strategy". The streaming giant is apparently moving away from its previous business model and will be replacing it with one that directly focuses on viewership numbers.

This isn't anything new for the BioShock franchise however, as a previous film adaptation ran into issues and was subsequently cancelled back in 2014.

The first adaptation was set to be directed by Gore Verbinski (director of the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies) but was later cancelled by Ken Levine himself, who worked as the Creative Director on both BioShock and BioShock Infinite.

The previous film was cancelled because Levine "didn't want to see it done in a way that I didn't think was right".

Levine also stated that "It was saying I don't need to compromise - how many times in life do you not need to compromise?"

Unfortunately it seems Netflix's adaptation has compromised, at least where its budget is concerned. Plenty of films have succeeded in spite of smaller budgets however, so there's still hope yet.

There's currently no set release date for the film, so we'll simply have to wait and see how it all pans out.
