BioShock 4 can wait, mark your calendars for 26 June

Relive this shocking classic

While we wait for news on BioShock 4, we should all mark our calendars for this beloved classic that was an inspiration to the series.

Originally released in 2007, BioShock was one of the most important games of its generation and has aged like a fine wine, so if you haven't already played it, you need to change that ASAP along with its two sequels.

Check out the System Shock 2 remaster trailer below!

Without giving too much away, BioShock is set in the underwater utopia known as Rapture, created by its mastermind, Andrew Ryan. It was supposed to be home to a new and improved, modified human race with unnatural powers provided by a newly discovered genetic modifying material known as ADAM.

Yet, things don't quite work out as Andrew Ryan had intended for his residents of Rapture. This once-intended utopia turned into a hell beneath the sea.

Before there was BioShock, there was System Shock, released on PC in 1994 and is said to be the inspiration behind the series developed then by Irrational Games. In fact, the lead developer of the BioShock series, Ken Levine, was heavily involved with the development of its sequel, System Shock 2.

BioShock 4 was announced in 2019 and is being developed by a new 2K studio, Cloud Chamber. However, Ken Levine isn't working on BioShock 4, because he’s busy working on its spiritual successor Judas for his new studio, Ghost Story Games.

While we wait for the arrival of BioShock 4 and Judas (none of which have release dates yet), you can not only play the game that inspired it all with the 2023 remaster of System Shock right now but also the upcoming remaster of its sequel handled by Nightdive Studios.

“System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is a genre-defining experience that established innovative game-play mechanics that are a staple of the FPS and RPG genre today,” reads the description of the game. “Survive the wretched corridors of the Von Braun. Your training has prepared you for this.”

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster will be playable up to 120 frames-per-second (144fps on PC) with ultra-widescreen support, optimised controller support, visual improvements and more. The PC version will also benefit from mods.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster will be released on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch on 26 June 2025.
