As much as I’m enjoying the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s phase four line-up, it does feel like Marvel is having a bit of mid-life crisis. Phase four has introduced us to tons of new lovable characters, particularly in stand-out hits like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight.
The problem is, Marvel seems to want to continue the event momentum that The Infinity Saga had yet phase four lacks an overall goal. There’s clearly a multiverse component running throughout phase four but we’re still lacking a big bad. Avengers: Endgame directors the Russo brothers may be here to save the day though as the duo are considering a return to the franchise to direct Secret Wars.
Check out the latest gameplay from Marvel's Midnight Suns, featuring Captain America.
If you don’t already know, Secret Wars was a 12 issue comic book series that saw the destruction of several universes, creating a new planet known as Battleworld. If you thought the Avengers team up in Endgame was impressive, Secret Wars sees the Avengers team up with the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.

Deadline recently spoke to Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo who described Secret Wars as something they were actively considering. They said, “Our love for Marvel is based on the books that we read as kids, the books that we fell in love with. The one series that we adored growing up was Secret Wars. It’s incredibly ambitious. It would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame. But it’s a massive undertaking. Those two movies were very hard to make. So trying to imagine making another two movies even bigger than those two? We’re going to have to sleep on that.”
Interestingly, several Secret Wars villains have already been introduced into the MCU’s phase four. Kang the Conqueror was referenced in Loki, and Titania will be introduced in the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, so Secret Wars could certainly be on Marvel’s mind.
