Just over a year ago, Ubisoft officially unveiled the first look at their open-world Avatar game, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and it all looked very promising indeed. The first-person Na’vi adventure is set to allow players to explore the world of Pandora, defending it from humans and their machines.
Despite being announced back in 2017, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora still doesn’t have a release date. Originally, it was assumed that it would release later this year to coincide with the next film instalment, Avatar: The Way of Water, but that’s no longer the case as Ubisoft have further delayed the title - and this latest delay is playing into fans' worst fears.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot referenced the delay during a recent earnings call, saying, “We want to make [Avatar] a video game industry brand. It is important for us that we come with something that is perfect,” which suggests that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is in less-than-perfect shape.

Well, industry insider and leaker Jeff Grubb has confirmed our suspicions. Taking to Twitter, Grubb said, “What I heard is that the game looks pretty and the gameplay is in rough shape. This was about a month ago.” Sigh. So in other words, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is classic Ubisoft.
Ubisoft games have developed somewhat of a reputation when it comes to all looks, no substance. Games like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Watch Dogs: Legion, and even Assassin’s Creed Odyssey spring to mind. All three titles boast attractive-looking worlds at first glance, but fail to utilise those open-worlds effectively through the gameplay.
As such, Ubisoft’s open-worlds can end up feeling hollow. Fans have similar concerns over Skull & Bones which has also faced major delays to date. Hopefully, Ubisoft now has time to bring the gameplay up to scratch.
