Assassin's Creed Infinity teased, will be a controversial change for the series

A controversial addition for sure

Ubisoft has multiple Assassin’s Creed projects in the works, but the largest in terms of scope has to be Infinity, which isn’t actually a game as such. Assassin’s Creed Infinity will act as a hub for all the games that have been released over the years.

Essentially, the Infinity hub will be a place where players experience the modern-day story of the games with entry points to take you into any of the games in just a few seconds, providing you own the game, of course. While this isn’t a particularly offensive implementation, Ubisoft is eyeing other changes that may not be so welcome.

Assassin's Creed Infinity would act as a hub that will release alongside Codename Red

Assassin’s Creed Infinity will act as a ‘live service’ component for the franchise and this brings with it all those ‘live service’ trappings that seem to split the gaming community; namely battle passes and cosmetics.

It seems ‘The Exchange’ which will be the hub’s item shop will rotate new cosmetics on a weekly and daily basis, kind of how we see Fortnite running their in-game store. Whether players will be able to redeem any of these with earned currency is yet to be seen, but you can bet that real-world currency will be accepted.

On top of this, plans seem to give away something called ‘projects’ which are accessed through ‘synchronisation’ and will offer “mini-battle passes for characters”. This may be a way to earn those cosmetics, but they could also differ and offer a lesser quality cosmetic. It’s hard to say at this point, but Ubisoft seems to acknowledge that these ‘projects’ will be released alongside new Assassin’s Creed games and DLC campaigns.

This could split the community, however, Ubisoft has a chance to buck the trend and release a live service component that straddles a healthier line of money and time invested for the reward of new cosmetics and in-game goodies. For now, we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
