If you’re after an Animal Crossing alternative on PC, then there’s a good chance you’ll fall in love with this free Steam offering available to play right now.
The Animal Crossing series is one of the most beloved properties of the Nintendo brand; however, unless you game on Nintendo, there’s no chance of you playing this popular life-sim franchise elsewhere. Well, unless you venture into the world of emulation.
Animal Crossing made its debut on the Nintendo GameCube in 2001, and its last full outing was on the Nintendo Switch in 2021 with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which, by the way, recently benefited from a new-gen upgrade on the Switch 2.
So, what is that Animal Crossing alternative that you can play on Steam right now, I hear you ask? The game in question is called Dragon Shelter, developed by Wild Forest Studio. As a bonus, its fantasy world setting might also please fans of Skyrim.
“Join a heartfelt adventure where friendship, care, and hard work restore harmony to a forgotten world. Rebuild the lost bond between humans and dragons as you transform abandoned lands into a place filled with warmth and joy. Grow crops, gather resources, raise adorable dragons, and help townsfolk rediscover their happiness,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam.

“Befriend cheerful dragons, each with unique traits and special powers that assist you on the farm and beyond. Care for them with love and playtime, and they’ll become loyal companions who sense people’s needs and lend their magic wherever it’s needed.”
Judging by the Dragon Shelter trailer, it looks like it could be blissful fun, not only with its crafting mechanics, NPC interactions and exploration, but also with its charming visuals and easing soundtrack that instantly provide all the cosy vibes.
No, at the time of writing, Dragon Shelter does not have a confirmed release date, other than a tentative 2026 launch window. However, you can check out the game right now, courtesy of its free playable demo on Steam.
According to its Kickstarter page, there are plans to also launch Dragon Shelter on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
If Dragon Shelter looks like it could be your cup of tea, it might be worth adding it to your Steam wishlist and following the game on its official social media channels to be notified when it's ready to launch.
