Amazon's The Lord Of The Rings Show Already Has Huge Amount Of Seasons Mapped Out

The Lord Of The Rings is, without doubt, one of the greatest franchises of all time. The books, films, games, extended lore and more have all combined to create arguably the best fantasy world ever conceived - Middle-earth - though the announcement that Amazon bought the rights to the franchise back in 2017 with plans to make a TV series left a lot of fans concerned. 

Amazon’s The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power isn’t even out yet, but there’s already multiple series’ planned. What’s more, is that the showrunners already know what the final shot of the show will be, whenever that comes to pass.

The Rings Of Power does have a brief teaser trailer which released earlier this year, giving a little flavour of what the Amazon Prime series is packing. Check it out below.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, showrunner JD Payne confirmed "the rights that Amazon bought were for a 50-hour show. They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas - this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. There are things in the first season that don't pay off until Season 5. We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be."

Yes you read that correctly, that’s not two, not three, nor four seasons planned. A whopping five seasons of the show are accounted for to contain the story Amazon is trying to tell. Clearly, they’re banking on it being a smash hit, then. If I can say anything to calm the nerves of LOTR fans, it’s that a bunch of Tolkien experts have already seen some of the first season, and unanimously thought it was excellent. Good news there, then.

"In his letters [particularly in one to his publisher],” JD Payne continued. “Tolkien talked about wanting to leave behind a mythology that 'left scope for other minds and hands, wielding the tools of paint, music and drama.' We're doing what Tolkien wanted, as long as we felt like every invention of ours was true to his essence, we knew we were on the right track."
