GTA 6 Online is more ambitious than we ever imagined

A whole new world

It feels like an obvious statement to say that GTA VI is going to be one of the most ambitious games ever made.

Details have emerged that point to Rockstar Games making the next iteration of GTA Online more expansive, with a view to implement user generated content, much like Fortnite and Roblox.

GTA Online remains incredibly popular with fans looking at what's coming next

According to Digiday, Rockstar Games is working with leading ‘metaverse’ creators and modders to set up GTA Online as an entertainment platform.

The developer has been hard at work on Project ROME (Rockstar Online Modding Engine) that will allow for more customisation, game types, and mini-games to emerge through the next iteration of the online game.

What does this mean for the future of the game?

Well, much like Fortnite, which has opened itself up to more community content over the past couple of years, we could see a wealth of original game types based on the game engine.

This will lead to players being able to experience content created by other players, most likely vetted by Rockstar Games to keep the quality bar high.

Whether the GTA VI version of GTA Online is billed as a ‘metaverse’ is yet to be seen - the passing fad that was once the wet dream of tech bros has rightly fizzled out.

Creating platforms in which players can get their hands on unique scenarios is all the rage, however, and the change would make sense for GTA VI.

Having a place, perhaps a storefront, where players can opt into new missions, use new weapons, or create racing tournaments would extend the life of the game beyond what Rockstar Games could imagine.

Another major factor that could play into these plans is the popularity of role-playing, which thrives within GTA V Online.

If this is the direction for GTA Online, it could mean players will stay in Vice City for many years to come.
