The Getaway is crying out for a PS5 remake

Make it happen, Sony!

To hell with games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and The Simpsons Hit & Run. If any classic open-world game out there needs to be revived on new-gen consoles, it's The Getaway.

Released for PlayStation 2 back in 2002 and developed by the Sony owned Team Soho, The Getaway is best described as a GTA clone that lets you tear it up in a genuinely impressive open-world recreation of London. Think Watch Dogs:Legion, but not rubbish.

Speaking of games set in London, you simply must watch the Fallout: London gameplay trailer below!

Graphically speaking it was an absolute feast for the eyes at the time, and pushed the PS2 to its limits with detailed London streets and exciting set pieces that took their inspiration from iconic UK gangster films.

A sequel was released in 2004, but The Getaway: Black Monday couldn't quite capture that same magic. As such, the series has been on ice for all this time. Fans still love the original game, however, and the hopes of a sequel or next-gen remake have been kept alive for the last decade or so.

Over on Twitter, a fan account dedicated to The Getaway continues to share fun behind-the-scenes snippets and the occasional "clue" it believes could point towards a remake. There was previously speculation that a new version of The Getaway was being planned to celebrate the game's 20th anniversary this year, but the occasion came and went without much fuss.

SIE London Studio - a division of the company that came about as the result of a merger between Team Soho and Psygnosis's Camden studio - is working on a brand-new game, but it isn't anything to do with The Getaway. Weirdly, however, it is set in London.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, last month London Studio co-head Tara Saunders claimed the new title - a fantasy co-op game set in a fairytale take on London - was being built specifically for PlayStation 5 with the developer’s Soho Engine. Not quite The Getaway remake we've been craving, but maybe one day. Maybe one day.
