The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer dropped earlier this week and while it looks like another cinematic banger I am worried about the casting decisions.
I don’t mean Rosalina or Bowser Jr when I say this. Brie Larson is an inspired choice for Rosalina and Benny Safdi is probably going to crush it as Bowser Jr. It’s Yoshi who’s got me worried.
Yoshi was teased in the post-credit scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and yet he was nowhere to be found in the new trailer. He’s definitely in the film as his design was leaked on a box of cookies in the U.S and yet he was held back from this first-look at the sequel.
Now this is likely due to him having a big presence in the film, and as such deserves a trailer all to himself so Illumination can show off his new design and tease his place in the narrative.

I have a different theory though… I think Nintendo and Illumination are planning a second Nintendo Direct presentation to announce which Hollywood actor has been selected to play the green dinosaur, thus confirming he’ll have a voice…
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has this opinion but I really don’t want Yoshi to have dialogue aside from his signature bleps and cries. I know Yoshi had a voice in the Super Mario World TV series but he’s never had one since and I think that’s for good reason. I genuinely think it’d be a mistake to change that now.
Yet it seems like a classic move from Illumination to give otherwise non-verbal characters speech. Just look at Donkey Kong, who can speak but very rarely full sentences, talking non-stop in the first film where he was played by Seth Rogen.

I’d be very surprised if Yoshi is an exception to the norm here, and I’d imagine whoever gets picked to voice him will be chosen with comedic effect in mind. Patrick Stewart could be cast and I honestly wouldn’t be that surprised.
Only time will tell of course, but I’m expecting a second Nintendo Direct to precede the second trailer, and for that second trailer to be all about Yoshi and the other “deep-cut” characters that were teased previously.
That said I still think The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks ace, and I’ll definitely be watching it regardless of who plays who.
