Zelda fans snub Majora's Mask remake as rumours ramp up

The long-running Zelda franchise has some weird and wonderful entries in its lore, and although the likes of Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland will likely never be beaten in that department, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is arguably the most out-there mainline entry.

Sadly, the fact that many consider Ocarina of Time one of the best games of all time means a sequel was always destined to fall in its shadow. For Majora's Mask, few expected that shadow to be quite so dark over at Nintendo.

While Zelda rumours are ramping up that a full-blown Majora's Mask is coming to Switch 2, it seems not everyone is sold on the idea.

Although we got the Resident Evil remake on the GameCube in 2002, Capcom really kicked things into overdrive with Resi remakes since 2019's Resident Evil 2. We know Resident Evil Veronica is on the way, and taking a leaf out of Capcom's book, could a Majora's Mask remake be on the way after we revisit Ocarina of Time?

Speculation was sparked when the IMDb page for Zelda voice actor Nobuyuki Hiyama was updated to include The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask HD. Hiyama is known for playing Adult Link in Ocarina of Time, so you can imagine the hype when this tidbit was discovered, but remember that anyone can update IMDb pages.

Added to this, the fact that the title is supposedly in post-production and is called Majora's Mask HD might suggest that it's not in the vein of the upcoming Ocarina remake.

Taking everything with a healthy pinch of salt, the page claimed that Hiyama would be playing Fierce Deity Link in the unannounced title.

If (and it's a big if) we're to believe IMDb, Majora's Mask HD could be directed by Mikiharu Oiwa, who also worked on the Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask 3DS remasters.

There's also the suggestion that the Ocarina remake and Majora's Mask will be developed by Japanese studio Grezzo. Grezzo last worked on 2024's The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Zelda fans have their reservations

While most of us will take all the remakes and remasters where we can when it comes to Zelda, some of you will take some more convincing.

Over on Reddit, u/LeonardoCouto explained why they aren't too fussed about a Majora's Mask remake. Saying they see no reason to play a revamp, the OP says current emulations are as good as we're going to get and that any modern version will water down the essence of the N64 classic.

Whereas an Ocarina remake can undoubtedly go bigger by expanding on areas like Hyrule Field, u/LeonardoCouto argues that Majora's Mask captured lightning in a bottle by being small, intimate, and 'VERY weird'.

They remind us that Majora's Mask added to its weird aesthetic with the N64’s low-poly graphics, whereas this was something that arguably held back Ocarina of Time.

Highlighting the somewhat mixed reception of 2015's The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D on 3DS, they added: "While OoT3D is a beloved remake of the original, MM3D gets a lot of deserved flack [sic] for misguided decisions that, in search of adding value, ultimately cheapen the game."

Championing the idea of skipping Majora's Mask and going straight to a mythical Twilight Princess remake, they concluded: "The biggest strengths of the original game weren't size or spectacle, but intimacy, strong direction and excellent efficiency of what it had available, at the time. A remake will, either by accident or inherently, miss these strengths."

It seems others in the comments were split, with someone else adding: "The 3DS version of Ocarina is already the best version, so it’s fine if they mess up this remake, but if they mess up a remake of Majora’s, then it’ll be the second bad remake and we’ll still be stuck with a version that’s nearly 30 years old."

Another said: "I'm not even going to read all of that. The title alone is rude. MM is my favorite game of all time. I of course would love to see it look absolutely gorgeous in 4K. Why wouldn't I?"

Elsewhere on Reddit, another skeptic mused: " Aonuma and Nintendo clearly don’t understand MM, he’s even been quite open with the fact that he dislikes the game, if they do a full remake they would absolutely screw it up.

“Majora's Mask isn’t like other games in the series, it was a beautiful mistake born out of the insane time crunch, keeping its spirit while remaking it will be extremely difficult."
