Earlier this year, Xbox Gold underwent a price hike which is never the news you want to hear. Microsoft’s subscription-based service grants players access to online multiplayer titles and a range of free monthly games.
A few months ago, the price of the service was raised by $1 a month making the total price of a one-month membership go up to $10.99. Needless to say, fans weren’t impressed and Microsoft justified the move by noting that the price “had not changed for years”. Well if you weren’t impressed by the price hike, Xbox Live Gold subscribers are now going to get even less bang for their buck.

As of October of this year, Xbox 360 games will no longer be added to the Xbox Gold subscription service. Currently, Xbox Gold subscribers receive four free games a month, similarly to how PlayStation Plus previously functioned, yet whilst PlayStation Plus offerings were exclusively made up of relatively recent PS4 and PS5 titles, Xbox Gold subscribers were oftentimes treated to older Xbox 360 games.

According to Twitter leaker Wario64, Microsoft has begun informing subscribers in Europe. Xbox 360 games that have already been claimed will continue to be available to redownload. The full tweet reads, “Starting in October, Xbox Games With Gold will no longer include Xbox 360 games (Microsoft has reached the limits to adding new X360 games to GWG). GWG will continue to offer Xbox One games. Any claimed Xbox 360 GWG titles can be redownloaded regardless of membership.”
It begs the question, are we going to see Xbox combine Xbox Gold with Game Pass? PlayStation made the move with PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now and subscribers seem to be enjoying the overhauled service. If this latest move is anything to go by, it certainly seems more likely than ever.
