Picture this - it’s an early Saturday morning in 2007. Your Wiimote in one hand, Nunchuk in the other, you stare into the eyes of the bald-headed, goatee-rocking menace on your screen. How many times have you attempted this now? Surely this time you’ve got it in the bag, right? Wrong. “K.O.”

I am, of course, referring to the man, the myth, the legend - Matt from Wii Sports. I don’t think there’s a single person who played the game who won’t recognise this absolute icon. He’s one of the many NPC Miis who you can play against during the various sports, although undoubtedly most will remember him from Boxing, where he was essentially the final boss. He's also risen to legendary meme status in more recent years, thanks to his unmatched, raw power.

So then, I don’t know whether it’s the best or most terrifying news that apparently, Matt might be making a return in the upcoming sequel, Nintendo Switch Sports. That’s according to a dataminer, who goes by @OatmealDome, on Twitter.

“The legend himself, Matt, may return in Switch Sports. However, I have only found his name. There is no file which describes how his Sportsmate avatar looks,” they wrote, attaching a screenshot of the supposed data.

However, I have only found his name. There is no file which describes how his Sportsmate avatar looks.

Unfortunately, as the dataminer says, there’s no visual on the man himself just yet, so there’s still a chance that it could be a different character using the same name. Given how iconic Matt is though, we can probably safely assume that it is him. That said, Boxing isn’t set to make a return in Switch Sports (at least not yet, anyway), so it makes you wonder what sport he’ll star in this time. Maybe he’ll become the final boss of the new Volleyball mode?

Speaking of Switch Sports, if you want to give the game a go yourself for free, you’ll be able to this weekend in the online-play trial. Well, if you’re a subscriber to Nintendo’s online service, anyway. Three sports, Tennis, Bowling and Chambara (essentially sword-fighting) will be available to play, although you’ll only be able to play against random online opponents, not friends. Be sure to check out more details here.
