Ubisoft Forgets Definition Of Insanity, Rumoured To Be Working On Another Battle Royale

'Hyper Scape' isn't even technically dead yet.

Rumours about a mysterious game called Project Q being developed by Ubisoft have been swirling since late 2021. However, new details have now been revealed suggesting it will be a battle royale.

Ubisoft has not had a good history with releasing games in the battle royale genre. In 2020, Ubisoft published Hyper Scape, a battle royale developed by Ubisoft Montréal. However, there were criticisms of unbalanced game mechanics, and as such in January, the publisher announced it would be shutting the game down on 28 April just 18 months after launch. In a statement, it said “we will be taking key learnings from this game into future products”.

If you don’t remember Hyper Scape you can see it for yourself in the trailer below.

The statement made it seem like the company was not done with the genre, despite Hyper Scape’s poor uptake. According to the latest information that very much appears to be the case.

As reported by insider Tom Henderson on exputer, Project X is being developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux. Henderson reports that in emails sent out by the studio to playtesters, which have been distributed over the past few days, it describes Project X as an “innovative and modern PvP battle arena game”.

The game will reportedly consist of two modes. Firstly there is Battle Zone, which is your average battle arena mode. In this mode four teams of two players will compete to be the first to score a hundred points.

The second mode, Showdown, is supposedly the battle royale mode, though smaller in scope than popular competitors such as Fortnite. In this version of battle royale there will only be eight players on the field, working in teams of two.

This number is tiny compared to the usual hundred players we see fighting for glory in battle royales. As such it has been speculated that the focus could be more on teamwork and stealth much like many of the games from Ubisoft’s long running Tom Clancy franchise.
