After it was reported that MGM lost the rights to the Tomb Raider movie franchise back in 2022, the sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander would no longer come to fruition.
However, over seven years on from its theatrical release, 2018’s Tomb Raider is having a bit of a renaissance after the movie charges into Netflix’s top charts for the month of December.
Starring Vikander as the iconic Lara Croft and loosely based on the rebooted Survivor trilogy, Tomb Raider followed the early days of our favourite adventurer as she embarked on a journey to unravel the truth behind her father’s mysterious disappearance.
Starring the likes of Walton Goggins and Dominic West, the movie, directed by Roar Uthaug received an average score of 55% on sites such as Rotten Tomatoes.

However, in recent years, it seems as though fans have had a change of heart on 2018’s Tomb Raider, especially as the movie now sees itself at number nine for global film releases on Netflix.
According to the streaming service, Tomb Raider has become one of the most-watched movies worldwide between 22 to 28 December.
Shared on the official Netflix website, we can see that the movie has stayed in the site’s top 10 movies for the past two weeks with over four million watches under its belt.
It joins the likes of The Grinch, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, K-Pop Demon Hunters, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas so why is 2018’s Tomb Raider making a comeback?
Well, a fun fact for all of you is that I was born in the same year that the world also welcomed the Tomb Raider franchise meaning that both me and it are set to celebrate our 30th anniversary this year.

Tomb Raider Is Approaching a Major Milestone
Although I am pretending that I am not hurtling towards 30, I am excited that the Tomb Raider franchise is and fans may be gearing up for the big day by taking a trip down memory lane with every iteration of the beloved Lara Croft.
We also have to consider that two brand-new Tomb Raider games were announced back in December: Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst.
With Tomb Raider: Catalyst arriving in 2027, it is not long before we get to join Lara in her adventures across Northern India in an entry which is expected to take place after the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld.
As for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, it does not yet have a release date but fans can expect a remake of the original Tomb Raider game set to launch some time this year.
Put simply, it is an exciting time for Tomb Raider fans and so it is perhaps no surprise that some of its most recent projects, such as 2018’s Tomb Raider, are finding themselves back in the spotlight.
