Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead TV show and comics

The Walking Dead fans are wondering what happened to all the zombies by the end of the series, and an epilogue holds the answer.

At the start of The Walking Dead the walkers were the main threat to the remaining humans, but as the series progresses they become more of an annoyance than something to be scared of.

Fans who haven’t made it to the end of the TV show yet or the comic books it was based on have been left wondering what happened to the majority of the zombies, and how after so many years they haven’t gone extinct yet.

One fan on Reddit had the answer, saying as the comics come to an end there comes a time where the zombie supply is “running low.”

Apparently the survivors manage to clear out several undead herds by either killing them the old fashioned way or luring them to their own deaths like bringing them to the ocean.

The fan went on to say “by the epilogue, they've reclaimed a good chunk of the East Coast, and so long as you don't go out to the ‘frontier’, it's incredibly rare to see a zombie. Rare enough that … some people are worried their kids won't understand how dangerous a zombie is because they've never seen one.”

There’s presumably still the small issue of everyone who dies running the risk of turning into a zombie, whether they’ve been bitten or not, but by that point it’s believed the majority of survivors understand the importance of destroying the brain when someone perishes.

It’ll be interesting to see if the spin-off shows of The Walking Dead eventually lead to some sort of epilogue special, where everyone gets their happy ending safe from the infection at last.
