In early January, a social media post by Will Smith had film fans wondering if the actor was about to join The Matrix reboot.

At first, this may have seemed like an odd assumption to make. But once you learn about Smith’s association with the very first Matrix film, such a link, however tenuous, doesn’t seem that strange.

Throughout January, Smith continued to post other teases that further fuelled the rumours that he would star in The Matrix reboot.

Harry Potter is being rebooted, in the form of a TV show at HBO.

While Smith has now starred in a retelling of The Matrix, of sorts, it’s not exactly what any of us had in mind.

All the clues we were given actually linked to Smith’s ‘Beautiful Scars’ music video.

Before the song begins, a short parody of The Matrix plays with Big Sean playing Morpheus.

The iconic red pill or blue pill scene takes place, with Big Sean offering Smith a chance to see what his life would have been like if he’d starred in the film after all.

Not content with not knowing, but not interested in leaving behind his current life, Smith swallows both pills.

This isn’t the only popular scene recreated in the music video, you’ll also see Smith dodging bullets like Neo after he unlocks his true potential.

But where does this leave the music video? Is Smith connected to the next Matrix film in any way or does its creation symbolise something else?

The latter is the answer here.

As detailed by Variety, ‘Beautiful Scars’ is a track taken from Smith’s new album, titled Based on a True Story.

Furthermore, an X post from The Hollywood Reporter writer, Aaron Couch, quickly revealed that Smith isn’t involved with The Matrix 5.

Don’t be too dismayed though, for it seems the film is still in development.
