Stranger Things Season 5 had a controversial ending for fans, with only three people in the world knowing the truth behind El's ambiguous fate. However, eagle-eyed fans have just spotted a bit of production whiteboard-work in the background of a shot in the bonus episode/documentary "One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5", that released on Netflix 13 January that might just settle the debate once and for all.
Spoilers Ahead For Stranger Things’ Final Season
The finale came and went with a very short battle between The Party and the Mind Flayer, while El and Vecna settled a long-standing score.
After a heroic sacrifice from El, victory was finally achieved and the team went back to everyday life as the world moved on, but fans were left unsatisfied with how convenient the whole thing felt.

Many theorised that a secret, ninth episode of Stranger Things Season 5 was on the way that would reveal Vecna wasn’t defeated and the whole thing was his mind games, in a fan theory dubbed 'Conformity Gate'. If you've not heard about it, check out that article. It's... Very copium. But I gotta say it... Stranger things have happened right? Hah.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be false, but a new documentary about the making of Season 5 has given us some indication of what the finale was meant to be, before presumably being rewritten into what we got.
Fans have zoomed in on a storyboard seen in the background of one of the shots, which reveals in an earlier draft El faked her death, and Hopper was in on the plan.
Most interestingly - El is GONE. Not dead. And Hopper is in on the plan, after finding out about it from Kali. This would have explained why Hopper takes El’s “death” much better than expected. After all, a key part of Hopper’s story, and his motivation for taking in El in the first place, is the loss of his own daughter. Hopper even talks to Mike on a bench in the finale about how he needs to move on and not let grief consume him, which many thought was very out of character. In fairness he grew a lot as a character as the series progressed, but still it was a little bit weird. Many of the cast and crew have shared their own takes on the ending.

Now in this scrapped finale it’s important to note that El is still taken away from her friends and family. The storyboard states that El chooses to remain in the rift but doesn’t die. Surely that's a worse fate??
Whether this was supposed to lead to that secret ninth episode or an unannounced project remains unknown. Though honestly, I would watch a spin-off of El in the destroyed Upside Down.
It’s hard to say if this version of the finale is better or not. The finale we got wasn’t the worst telly we’ve ever watched but it did leave a lot of questions unanswered and, as I said before, I felt that the behaviour of some of the characters exhibited is odd.
With this ending things would have at least made a little more sense, but ultimately it still feels like the same conclusion.
