Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has weighed in a little on the Snoke plot twist, and some fans are torn.
If you cast your mind back to the end of 2017, you might remember how divisive Star Wars: The Last Jedi was with audiences. Although we know it’s great, a lot of fans took issue with some of the plot details and character development the film did.
One of the biggest moments in the film comes towards the end where Kylo Ren, seemingly following orders to kill Rey, instead turns his lightsaber on Snoke, betraying his master and becoming the new Supreme Leader of the First Order.
Rian Johnson has weighed in on why he decided to kill off Snoke in the second film of the trilogy, when it seemed like he had been set up to be the big bad of the trilogy.

“This is all a matter of perspective and phrasing, but to me, I didn’t easily dispense with Snoke,” Johnson told Rolling Stone. “I took great pains to use him in the most dramatically impactful way I could, which was to then take Kylo’s character to the next level and set him up as well as I possibly could.
“I guess it all comes down to your point of view. I thought, ‘This is such a compelling and complicated villain. This is who it makes sense going forward to build around.”
Star Wars fans have had opinions on this over the years, and it seems like this new interview with Johnson hasn’t swayed the pendulum in either direction.
“I was totally fine with this,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter) “First time (ever? Maybe?) I was fully shocked in a Star Wars movie.

"Snoke was just another Palpatine and whatever his grand plans were at the time were irrelevant to Kylo's journey. Using his death to elevate Ben and advance the journey made much more sense.”
“I fully support his decision to kill Snoke, but Rian should have provided depth as to who he is,” another fan added.
A third reply reads: “Very true that a considerable amount of time was spent theorizing who and what Snoke was and his purpose. But we could also say that about Luke and Rey and other expected plot lines that weren’t followed up on. It was all about subverting audience expectations instead of meeting in the middle and giving fans what they wanted as well. What a waste.”
It seems like the debate of whether Johnson made the right decision or not continues. At the end of the day, everyone is just going to stick to their lane and refuse to budge.
