Although it is never fun to see a beloved character die in our favourite media, sometimes their death is needed to add emotional weight to the story, or to give the surviving characters the motivation to keep fighting.

After all, that is a lesson we have learned growing up.

Check out the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker below!

However, the decision to keep one iconic character alive during one of the newest Star Wars entries has left fans feeling divided according to a recent conversation over on r/StarWars.

The character is none other than our favourite Wookiee, Chewbacca who was first introduced in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

He became such a popular character that he went on to star in eight Star Wars movies, including the movie at the forefront of today’s discussion, 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Despite getting himself into quite a precarious position during the movie, making the audience think that he may have finally met his demise, it seems as though Chewbacca did indeed survive which has left one fan in particular feeling miffed.

“Did anyone wish Chewbacca died?” User BCDragon3000 posted.

“I’m not saying that Chewbacca should’ve died.

But in an otherwise boring movie, when Rey shot lightning at the ship and thought Chewbacca had died I actually thought they’d take some stakes in what they were promoting to be the “finale” to these characters.

The reveal that he was on the other ship felt so… ugh.”

Although it looks like quite a controversial take, it seems as though many Star Wars fans agree and they took to the comments to share their own thoughts.

“My problem is they played the "not really dead" card too many times for death to hold any real weight.

And this is a persisting problem with Disney throughout many of their shows,” the top comment read.

User GrandFrogPrince joked, “It's just annoying that they keep killing people and it has zero consequences because they aren't really dead.

Next, we are going to find out that Han Solo luckily fell into a surgery suite and was saved!”

It seems as though fans wish that the incredible Star Wars writers will take some bigger risks and maybe we'll see that with the upcoming Rey movie, tentatively titled New Jedi Order.
