It’s often difficult for a sequel to live up to its predecessor such as The Lost World: Jurassic Park II, From Dusk Till Dawn 2 or Donnie Darko 2 to name a few. However, one movie that will hope to avoid that pitfall is the sequel to Ready Player One.

Directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, inspired by the Ernest Cline novel, Ready Player One was released in 2018 and did quite well critically and commercially. Ready Player One garnered just under $584 million at the worldwide box office according to Box Office Mojo, and scored a modest 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. Sure, it wasn't the best movie but it was at least a fun family outing at the cinema.

“In the year 2045, the real world is a harsh place. The only time Wade Watts truly feels alive is when he escapes to the OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where most of humanity spends their days. In the OASIS, you can go anywhere, do anything, and be anyone, the only limits are your own imagination,” reads the synopsis of the movie.

The OASIS is a virtual reality world controlled by a large corporation that has the goal of controlling our lives, knowing everything about us and making all the money in the world. In 2018, the concept of this movie seemed like a weird dystopian tale but as the years passed, it feels more of a reality today than it ever has. So it will be interesting to see how or if the sequel, Ready Player Two further plays on modern society and corporations.

News of the Ready Player One sequel first broke in 2020, but now it’s taken a huge step in its production. As reported by Showbiz 411, Steven Spielberg has confirmed Ready Player Two is now in development and it will star the returning Tye Sheridan as Wade/Parzival.

Story details on Ready Player Two have not been revealed at the time of writing, but full production is expected to begin in 2025. It is also expected that Steven Spielberg will once again direct and co-produce the sequel.

As for when Ready Player Two will be released in cinemas across the world and considering that full production won't likely begin until 2025, it’s safe to assume that its release is two or three years away, at least.
