Spider-Man 4 returning character leaves fans divided

Spider-Man 4 will apparently reunite Peter Parker with his one true love, for better or for worse.
Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, our hero is left with no family, friends, home or job, only a homemade Spider-Man suit and fond memories of being an Avenger, while the world has moved on and forgotten Peter Parker ever existed.

Comic book fans will know these are essentially the best conditions for a great Spider-Man story, though it appears it won’t all be doom and gloom as Zendaya will apparently reprise her role of MJ in Spider-Man 4.
It’s also rumoured Sydney Sweeney could join the cast as Black Cat, though that’s unconfirmed at the time of writing.
As you can imagine the decision to bring MJ back into the story is a point of contention amongst fans.
On the one hand, she’s the love interest for Spider-Man, so it makes sense for her to be there, but on the other hand it would completely reverse the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which showed Peter giving up his social life to be the hero he needs to be.
Fans said as much in a Reddit thread talking about Zendaya’s return to the role, with one fan saying it will “depend on how they do it … bringing MJ and/or Ned back in Spider-Man 4 may or may not be good for Spider-Man 4, but it would be terrible for Spider-Man 3.”
“Tbh I was kinda expecting her to return but in Spider-Man 5” added another MCU fan.
It’s still very early days for Spider-Man 4, and there’s no word on what the plot will be about as it’s scheduled to release in-between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, implying it’ll be a multiverse story.
Only time will tell, though I’m personally hoping for a more grounded story in the next Spidey film.
