Spider-Man 4 update is 'great' news, fans agree

Unfortunately, this "great" news is actually bad news for a different MCU film

It would seem that Marvel fans are completely in agreement regarding the latest Spider-Man 4 update, even though lovers of a different MCU film aren’t too happy with how it’ll affect a different character’s upcoming sequel.

Back in September, it was revealed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings' director Destin Daniel Cretton would be taking over directorial duties for Tom Holland's next Spider-Man outing, following Jon Watts' departure.

In a recent Reddit thread over on the r/marvelstudios subreddit, fans discussed how they feel about the choice of director (spoiler alert: it’s unanimously positive).

“Great choice and apparently he's taking with him the fight choreographer from Shang-Chi,” commented user No_Read_5062.

“Considering how well he did for Shang-Chi and I think American Born Chinese for action and story (at least the story for Shang-Chi),” replied user NitrousReadsReddit, “I doubt that Destin will screw this up, even if Spider-Man 4 is another multiverse movie.”

However, although everyone is generally pretty thrilled that Destin Daniel Cretton has been chosen as director, a lot of people couldn’t help but feel disappointed that it may have come at the cost of a different MCU sequel, Shang-Chi 2.

Thunderbolts* will land next year.

“I’ve no doubt he will do great,” stated user JacobLemongrass, “I just wish he were making Shang-Chi 2 instead.”

“Great choice, probably the best one they could've made for Spidey,” concurred user paulojrmam, “Just a bit sad that it postpones Shang-Chi even further. But even still, Spider-Man's more important so I can't disagree.”

As revealed by Variety's Katcy Stephan back in October, Cretton was initially supposed to direct the sequel to Shang-Chi but the project has since been delayed following the announcement of his directorial duties on Spider-Man 4.

Here’s hoping it was delayed to the point that Cretton can come back for the sequel, because I don’t think Shang-Chi 2 would feel the same without him.
