MCU Viewers Pay Tribute To Legend Robert Redford, Dead at 89

The actor died at his home in Utah on Tuesday morning

MCU fans are paying tribute to actor Robert Redford, who has died today at the age of 89.

Redford’s career spanned seven decades, beginning with Broadway and television roles in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Following this, he got his big break in the 1967 film Barefoot in the Park and the 1969 western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

In the ‘70s and ‘80s he established himself as a leading A-lister, with major roles in films such as Three Days of the Condor, All the President’s Men, Brubaker, and Out of Africa.

Redford made his directorial debut in 1980 with Ordinary People. The film followed a wealthy family torn apart by the accidental death of one of their two sons, and the attempted suicide of the other. He would go on to direct eight more feature films in his career over the next 30 years.

Marvel fans know him as villain Alexander Pierce, who Redford played in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Although he retired from acting in 2018, he returned to the MCU for a small cameo a year later, appearing as Pierce again in a short scene in Avengers: Endgame.

Redford died early Tuesday at “at Sundance in the mountains of Utah - the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved”, as confirmed by his publicist Cindi Berger. Berger adds that Redford’s family have requested privacy during this time.

Meanwhile, MCU viewers have paid tribute to the late star on social media. Over on the Marvel Studios Reddit page, one fan wrote: “I watched this exact scene yesterday evening. Robert Redford whispering Hail Hydra in Winter Soldier is one of the iconic Marvel moments.”

“RIP to a legend,” another comment reads. “My condolences to his family and loved ones.”

“Wow, lost a great here. Three Days of the Condor (loose inspiration for Winter Soldier) and All the President's Men are my favourites of his,” another comment expressed.

“Astoundingly good actor and better person by the sounds of it,” another reads. “If you're not too familiar with him outside of the MCU, definitely dig into his filmography - so many bangers in there.”

In addition to his acting and director work, Redford was also a huge supporter of environmentalism, Native American rights, and LGBT rights, and was involved with various activist campaigns related to those causes.

He is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, whom he married in 2009, as well as his two daughters, Shauna and Amy.
