This weekend saw the shocking news that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU but he won’t be donning his Iron Man suit this time.

San Diego Comic-Con went off with a bang this weekend when it was revealed that the ex Iron Man star would be returning to the MCU in the role of Doctor Doom.

Downey Jr. took to the stage in his typical theatrical fashion, donned in a green suit and mask, before the latter was removed to thunderous applause.

This will be the first time the actor will star in a Marvel movie since Tony Stark/Iron Man sacrificed himself to stop Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

However, with fans believing this was the end of his role in the MCU, they were mistaken as he will be taking on the role of Doctor Doom, a supervillain first appearing in The Fantastic Four #5.

With fan reactions mixed, a report has revealed that Downey Jr. only agreed to return to the MCU under one condition: if Joe and Anthony Russo were to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The report by Variety spoke to an insider who revealed that "they were the only ones he would work with.”

It is also expected that the reported $80 million paycheck also helped convince the actor to return. Not to mention his request for travel via a private jet, his own security detail and an entire encampment for him to chill out on set.

Although his reveal as Doctor Doom shocked fans all over the world, Downey Jr. had previously teased the idea of returning back in June.

"It's just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I've ever played, even though he's way cooler than I am," he said in a video last month.

"I've become surprisingly open-minded to the idea... It really is crazy because we look pretty good. I was actually looking at the stills we were taking, making sure: "Do we still look kind of OK?" I'm like, 'We look pretty good.'"

The Marvel film series has plenty of upcoming projects including Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Blade, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
