The Marvel Cinematic Universe is home to its fair share of recasts.

Let’s not forget that the MCU spans around 36 films plus a bunch more TV shows; now and again, you’re going to run into a scheduling issue that forces a character to be recast.

Then there are age-related recasts, while I’m sure, on occasion, there are simply actors who don’t wish to return.

Emma Fuhrman, for example, replaced Abby Ryder Forston as an aged-up Cassie Lang, before Fuhrman was replaced with Kathryn Newton in Quantumania.

Mark Ruffalo famously replaced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, Harrison Ford took over playing Thaddeus Ross from the late William Hurt, and Don Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard as Rhodey.

Perhaps one of the most underrated recastings though is that of the character Red Skull.

Red Skull was portrayed excellently by actor Hugo Weaving in Captain America: The First Avenger, before the role passed over to Ross Marquand for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

Marquand so effortlessly tapped into Red Skull that many fans didn’t even realise that the character had actually been recast.

Thunderbolts* is the MCU’s current major release.

Essentially, Weaving ended his contract with Marvel as he didn’t want to wait too long before reprising the character.

A casting search opened and that’s where Marquand stepped in, perhaps best known for his work on The Walking Dead.

It’s one of the MCU’s most seamless casting transitions, if you ask me.

“Ross Marquand killed it as Red Skull. Seeing Infinity War in theatres, I legitimately thought they got Hugo Weaving back. As a Walking Dead fan, it was a nice surprise when I found out it was him,” remarked Reddit user Rman823.

“This is the first I’m hearing about this,” replied MVIVN.

“His impersonations and voices are insane. Was glad to see him get brought into the MCU,” added myersjw.

If you didn’t know, Marquand reprised the role in What If…? where he also voices Ultron; the actor also portrays Professor X, Doctor Doom, and Apocalypse in X-Men ‘97.

He’s a booked and busy fella.
