The MCU as we know it is officially coming to an end

No longer a rumour

It has long been rumoured that the MCU, as we know it, will be rebooted with the next few years, and now it has been made official.

For long months, fans have speculated that the MCU would be getting a soft reboot of sorts after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, and in a recent interview, Kevin Feige has confirmed it.

Feige spoke to Deadline, to confirm that the plan is to focus on singular timelines, bringing an end to the multiverse saga.

Not only that, but the Marvel exec said that the events of Avengers: Secret Wars would provide a “reset” for the MCU continuity.

To comic book readers, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The events of the Secret Wars comic book merged Marvel’s messy multiverse into one.

The run of comics sees Doctor Doom bring together all the various universes under the Marvel umbrella, and create one singular timeline.

If this idea causes concern, there shouldn’t be much need to worry. We won’t be losing huge groups of superheroes, but the stories that provided variants of characters will come to an end, and some of those characters will cease to exist.

The original X-Men, from the 20th Century Fox timeline, and run of films, will likely get the send-off they deserve as Feige prepares to bring in a new team of mutants for the MCU.

Of course, details on the reset, are scant, but all will become clear as we move through the final stages of the multiverse saga, and begin to see what the MCU will look like after those events.

Interestingly, Feige noted that he didn’t want to call it a reboot, saying, “Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people.”

He emphasised that this is a reset, a singular timeline, which sounds a lot like trimming the fat and being more concise in the future.
