MCU fans furious as we learn who killed all the Kangs

Oof, written out off-screen, no less...

We may finally have our answer regarding the demise of the Kangs in the MCU, although the jury is out on whether or not it is conclusive proof of the storyline officially wrapping up.

Spoilers in advance for a recent episode from What If…? season three!

In Episode Seven of the latest season of the Disney+ show What If...?, titled 'What If... the Watcher Disappeared?', it is implied that Captain Carter and The Exiles wiped out the Council of Kangs, as Peggy Carter can be seen emerging from a Time Sphere at one point in the episode.

In a Twitter thread reacting to the reveal, fans weren’t too happy with the supposed way the story of Kang has wrapped up.

“Actually laughable,” commented user @callmejudeeaa, “Major issues aside, the Kang storyline was definitely going to take the MCU to a new level. They really should have just recast the role.”

Captain America: Brave New World is next to air, releasing in February 2025.

“I mean I guess they had to explain their absence somehow,” replied user @Evergreen_Guard, “Still would’ve been better to keep Kang in their back pocket and have him show up whenever felt right since technically he can sensibly appear whenever due to his time travel, but oh well.”

Now it is important to note that, just as with most episodes in the show, the events of What If…? are not actually canon - so technically this isn’t really wrapping up anything.

Plus, the reveal in the episode is a bit of a throwaway visual gag. It’s never actually explicitly stated that the Time Sphere’s existence ever actually resulted in the death of the Kangs, it’s just something that fans think was implied.

Either way, we’re definitely never seeing Jonathan Majors return to the role.

Marvel could, potentially, still recast the role in the future, but for the time being it seems they are completely done with the storyline.
