Yesterday, without so much as batting an eye, Denzel Washington casually and offhandedly revealed that he’s in talks with Ryan Coogler to take on a role in Black Panther 3.

In an interview with the Today Show in Australia, Denzel told the host that he’s “only interested in working with the best” at this point in his career, given that he’s now 70 (bro WHAT is your skincare routine?), and that director Ryan Coogler is “writing a part for me in the next Black Panther”.

The actor also implied that the role will likely be one of his last, saying, “I don’t know how many more films I’m gonna make, probably not many.”

In DiscussingFilm’s Tweet detailing the news (which now has over 100,000 likes), fans of both the MCU and people who are great at acting were thrilled to learn of the news.

“Denzel Washington in a Marvel Movie and it’s Black Panther?” replied @royal_bobby24, “We won.”

Captain America: Brave New World is next on the release slate.

User @sol_boxy agreed, commenting “Denzel and Wakanda? Now that's what I call perfect casting. Can't wait to see what Ryan Coogler does with a legend like him.”

The news of Denzel Washington’s role in the next Black Panther is especially meaningful given his ties to the late Chadwick Boseman.

During a speech where he presented Denzel Washington with the AFI Life Achievement Award back in 2019, Boseman praised Washington for making his role in Black Panther possible.

Boseman revealed that Washington helped to pay for his tuition when he was in acting school, and stated that there would be “no Black Panther” without the actor's help.

“My whole cast stands on your shoulders,” Boseman said during his speech, “The many sacrifices you made for the culture on film sets through your career, the things you refused to compromise along the way lay the blueprints for us to follow."
