The Witcher finally confirms Geralt's age, and he's way younger than I expected

Believe it or not, The Witcher series has never really given an exact answer on Geralt of Rivia’s age.

Due to his status as a magical mutant, it’s established in The Witcher canon that Geralt ages much slower than humans. It just leaves him more time to hunt monsters, right?

His white hair and fairly aged appearance give him an older look. But when witchers can live for hundreds of years, this doesn’t say much.

The series establishes Vesemir as the oldest living witcher, who is estimated to be at least 350 years old.

So it would stand to reason that Geralt could easily be a hundred years old, as some fans have theorised.

Now, series author Andrzej Sapkowski’s new book Crossroads of the Crows has finally established Geralt’s age once and for all - and he’s much younger than any of us thought.

Crossroads of the Crows is a prequel to the series which takes place in 1229, roughly two decades before The Last Wish, where Geralt is mentioned as being 18 years old [via Redanian Intelligence].

This places his birth year in 1211, making him officially 39 years old by the time The Last Wish is supposed to take place. By The Lady of the Lake, the final book in the saga, Geralt would be 57 years old.

As for the games, The Witcher 3 takes place in 1272. This makes him 61 years old by the time of the games.

Still, given his agility and fighting skill, he’s clearly in no rush to join a retirement home.

Confirmation of Geralt’s age also brings up a few other interesting facts about how he relates to other characters in the series. For example, we now know he’s just over 40 years older than Ciri, and 38 years younger than Yennefer.

This contradicts earlier material which stated Geralt was a year younger than Yen, but we’ll let that slide as that information came from CD Projekt Red rather than Sapkowski himself.

I guess I always considered Geralt to be a little older than being in his sixties. He’s supposed to be around 80-100 years old during the Netflix show, so it felt safe to assume the same for the books and games canon.
