It’s not an exaggeration to say that The Witcher 3 is probably one of the best games ever made. Over seven years on from its release, and fans still have as much love for it as ever.

Earlier this week, the highly anticipated new-gen update finally landed on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Promising some significant visual and performance upgrades, as well as new content and quality of life improvements, you’d think that it'd be received very well, and while it has been by some, the same definitely can’t be said for others, as the game has begun receiving a slew of negative user reviews on Metacritic.

Take a look at The Witcher 3’s new-gen update in action below.

Unfortunately for PC users, the update brought with it a lot of new issues - CD Projekt RED has confirmed that these are currently being investigated, so we can expect an additional update at some point soon. However, these issues seemingly aren’t the reason for most of the negative reviews - it’s being criticised for loads of other things, including being “very boring” and “overhyped”.

One said that “huge open world games are getting old”, while another wrote that after the update, it’s “just [the] same old game”. Following the same sentiment, another added that they’re “so tired of these endless re-releases of older games”.

Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and nothing can be universally loved by everyone. The update has also likely brought in a lot of new players who just haven’t gelled with the game, and that’s totally fine, too. That’s part of the beauty of video games - there’s plenty out there for everyone, so if one particular title isn’t really your thing, there’s nothing stopping you from putting it down and moving on to something else. Having fun is what matters the most.
