‘The Quarry’ Was Originally Set To Be A Google Stadia Exclusive

The Quarry may be available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, but it was originally a Stadia exclusive.

If you’re anything like me, you may have spent the past week obsessing over The Quarry. The spiritual successor to 2015’s Until Dawn, Supermassive Games’ latest title sees a bunch of summer camp counsellors experience a horror-filled night they’ll never forget, if they make it out alive.

In our review, Imogen said The Quarry is “one of the most entertaining experiences in the choose-your-own-adventure genre,” thanks to its expert blending of “80s horror tropes, gallons of gore, and caustic humour.” She’s right. The Quarry is tons of fun with plenty of us experiencing these horrors for ourselves across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Once upon a time though, The Quarry was intended to be a Google Stadia exclusive.

We got to chat to David Arquette about The Quarry and his character camp leader Chris Hackett. Take a look below.

According to Axios, The Quarry and Squanch Games’ High On Life were both intended to be Google Stadia exclusives with Google looking for ways to make the streaming service more attractive after experiencing disappointing subscription figures.

Before Stadia ceased its first-party studio operations, Google was allegedly working on both The Quarry and High On Life in-house. When the operation was shut down, both titles were shopped around to typical third-party publishers. Neither game credits Google as being involved in the production.

Supermassive Games and Google did announce back in 2020 that they’d entered a partnership but details weren’t given on exactly what this partnership entailed. Given what we now know about The Quarry’s origins, it was likely the beginning of development on this game.

All in all, it’s probably a win for us that these games didn’t end up on Stadia as the streaming services’ outreach is a fraction of the audience that these games have now reached. If you haven’t yet taken a trip to Hackett’s Quarry, you totally should.
