A new free download for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has completely changed the game, offering a new perspective reminiscent of the classic games.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom remain as two of the most popular entries in the series from recent years, and it’s easy to see why. The freedom and versatility of both make it a must-play for RPG fans.
We’re probably still a few years away from getting the next Legend of Zelda game, however, so there are quite a few reasons to revisit these recent titles.
Now, a new mod for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has completely transformed the game, adding a classic-style top-down camera in the same vein as the NES Zelda games or A Link to the Past.

Here’s a video demonstrating the mod in action. Funnily enough, considering these games were built as 3D RPGs, this makes Tears of the Kingdom resemble more of an isometric RPG than a top-down Zelda game.
Either way, it’s pretty cool the way it functions. Usually, mods like these typically come with some restrictions or bugs as a result of essentially breaking the game to be something it wasn’t designed to be.

However, the mod seems to have translated to a top-down perspective rather flawlessly. There aren’t really any major bugs that I’ve noticed, aside from the camera occasionally clipping inside an object that gets in the way.
Still, this mod has made me want a brand new 3D Zelda game from Nintendo presented in this style. It might be the best way to get new and old fans on the same page. You can’t please everyone, of course, but there’s no harm in trying.
Here's a link to the mod, in case you wanted to try it yourself and have the means to install mods.

What's next for The Legend of Zelda?
As for the next game in The Legend of Zelda series, Nintendo remains rather tight-lipped about the next mainline game. A new spin-off, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment launches later this week though.

However, rumours have suggested that Nintendo could be planning something big for the series’ 40th anniversary next year.
Whether this is a new game, or a remaster of a classic title, remains to be confirmed.
A film developed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures is also in development, and will release in cinemas on 7th May, 2027. The film stars actors Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Zelda and Link respectively.
