The Last Of Us season 2 has been put on hold

Season two of HBO's The Last of Us has temporarily been put on hold amidst the ongoing WGA writers strike.

It’s bad news if you’re a fan of HBO’s The Last of Us - and based on the show’s colossal success, let’s be honest, that’s practically all of us. Despite showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s previous intentions, season two has temporarily been put on hold.

To recap, we know that The Last of Us’ second season will adapt The Last of Us Part II - but it will do so across “several seasons” seeing as Part II tells a much larger and more complex story. Abby is yet to be cast but fans have a pretty good idea about who they’d like to see in the role. Just the other week, Mazin and Druckmann confirmed that filming on season two was “months, not years, away from starting,” plus we know that season two locations have already been scouted, with Vancouver standing in for Seattle. Variety reports though that an unexpected issue has delayed production.

Speaking of game adaptations, have you checked out the trailer for the upcoming Twisted Metal TV series? Take a look below.

You may have heard about the writers' strike that’s happening in the US. If you haven’t, the Writers Guild of America is currently campaigning for better pay. This means that no scripts are currently being worked on by members, and writers are also not carrying out on-set duties such as assisting with last minute rewrites and amendments. Of course, this will hopefully be resolved when a better pay agreement is found for all of the wonderful writers out there who entertain and delight us with their work, but Hollywood has come to a standstill in the meantime.

The Last of Us’ season two scripts are now on hold due to the strike action and as Variety reports, originally showrunners were planning to audition actors for new characters using scenes from the video games but seemingly that plan has been put on hold too. While filming was originally set to commence later this year, the plan is now to kick off proceedings in 2024. Again, this all hinges on the WGA agreeing to a new pay deal though.

It’s not the only series impacted. Filming of Stranger Things’ upcoming final season has also been delayed. Perhaps more worryingly, House of the Dragon and Andor are continuing filming without a writer on set. Do you want to know a project that did that during the last writers strike? Quantum of Solace, which I think we can all agree was a tad messy so in fact, the delay is likely a good thing.
