A new multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 has just received 25 minutes of gameplay footage.
While you can't officially play a multiplayer version of The Last of Us Part II, modder Speclizer has been working on a mod for months now proving that it's possible.
The mod has been in development for the PC version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered since January, and from what we've seen so far it's looking pretty spectacular.
The video begins by showing off the mod's menu, where you can select a map, choose your gear, and use matchmaking to search for other players to play against.

There are currently two maps in the mod, a barebones map called Custom Map with a few in-game assets loaded in, and a map called Houses based on the Hillcrest chapter from the story.
After this, the video jumps into a demonstration of the multiplayer gameplay the mod features.
It looks like the standard multiplayer mode is a form of Team Deathmatch (called Supply Raid here), with one team being the WLF and the other team being Seraphites.
Two players are loaded in for the purposes of the video, but up to eight players in total can be present in a single multiplayer match.
Each team has 20 lives, and getting a kill will reward the player with 100 points, presumably that you can later spend on new gear after the round has finished.
Other details we can pick out of the video is that Listen Mode seems to be fully functional during play, and there's also a minimap in the top corner of the screen which shows the enemy's position.
These are both presumably for testing purposes, and may be dialled back or removed completely for the full release.
According to Speclizer, the planned release date for the mod is September 2026 (oh boy, that's another September release).

In the original The Last of Us and its 2014 remaster, multiplayer was known as Factions. The mode was removed for The Last of Us Part II and the 2022 remake of the first game, with Naughty Dog instead working on a standalone Factions game called The Last of Us Online.
However, this game was cancelled in late 2023 due to Naughty Dog being unable to maintain a live service game while also working on the blockbuster single-player titles it has become known for.
While there aren't a lot of gameplay details on what The Last of Us Online would have become, we know it would have had seasons, battle passes, and probably would have been similar to the Factions MP from the first game, albeit on a larger scale.
While Speclizer's mod probably won't be on the same scope, here's hoping that the mod is able to deliver on the multiplayer The Last of Us Part II experience that many fans desperately crave.
