The Last Of Us Part 3 unexpected lead divides fans: ‘we need closure’

Not everyone agrees with this take

When it comes to some of gaming’s biggest questions, whether or not there will be a The Last of Us Part III is one of them.

However, with Naughty Dog’s studio head Neil Druckmann dropping nothing more than vague answers about its potential, it remains to be seen if a sequel will ever come to fruition.

Let us face it, The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II have already been incredibly successful and there is no doubt that Naughty Dog and Sony can pump out a few more remasters.

In addition, many new fans are picking up the games after falling in love with HBO’s The Last of Us series so if there was to be a third instalment, now would be the perfect time to announce it.

However, if it was announced and a third part was to be released, who would our main character be?

Would we return to Ellie and find out what happened to her after the events of Part II? Or will there be a completely new character entirely?

Well, according to user MorseCode00 over on r/thelastofus, they would like to see a familiar character head The Last of Us Part III.

“He needs to be the protagonist of Part III,” they shared, alongside an image of Tommy.

“We’ve played as Joel, Ellie, and even Abby, but Tommy’s story is still untapped.

Ellie pushed Tommy into hunting Abby, and he really didn't want to in the beginning, but in the end, he was the one eager to finish the job when he was in too deep and had lost everything.

Part lll could focus on him exploring whether he finds redemption, a new purpose, or just more destruction. Does he let go of Abby, or does he spiral down and continue to go after her?

We need closure on this man's story.”

The user makes a good point but as you can imagine, having Tommy as our next protagonist is not something that a lot of fans agree with.

“He’s literally broken at this point.

Can barely walk and is missing an eye. He’s not the same person from the first two games anymore and wouldn’t be a good main character.

We can get closure in his story without playing as him,” the top comment by user formachlorm reads.

“Why? The Last of Us has always been Ellie's story, we just haven't always played as her, and she shared it with Abby in Part 2,” another user added.

“In Part 1 it was still her story, just from Joel's perspective.

Part 3 must have Ellie as protagonist.”

If The Last of Us Part III ever happens, a lot will be riding on its protagonist so let us hope that Naughty Dog makes the correct decision should it ever come to fruition.
