'The Last Of Us Part 2' Has Sold A Staggering Number Of Copies

Naughty Dog's divisive title doesn't appear to be so divisive when it comes to sales.

It’s a good time to be a The Last of Us fan, isn’t it? Summer Game Fest ended with a flurry of exciting announcements about Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic franchise.

A new-gen remake of the original game titled The Last of Us Part 1 is set to launch this September and it was confirmed that a multiplayer game is also officially in the works. We got another glimpse at Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in action on HBO’s TV adaptation (which wraps production today) AND it was revealed that Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker will star in the TV show in undisclosed key roles. Fellow stans, we’re really out here thriving, huh?

Check out the brand new trailer for The Last of Us Part 1 which is set to release on 2 September, 2022.

Amidst all of the announcements of what’s coming up, Naughty Dog also had the chance to look back at 2020’s The Last of Us Part II because the game recently hit a huge milestone. As of earlier this year, The Last of Us Part II has officially sold over 10 million copies - which is a lot. Duh.

Sharing the news on Twitter following Summer Game Fest, Naughty Dog’s vice president Arne Meyer wrote, “Delighted to share our Summer Game Fest announcement: The Last of Us Part II surpassed 10 million copies sold earlier this year! Congrats to all of Naughty Dog! Thanks to all at SIE, our partners, and all our fans for supporting our studio and our games. Love you all!”

To compare, The Last of Us sold over 20 million copies by 2019 which is six years after release so for The Last of Us Part II to achieve half of this in just two years is an impressive feat. It may seem like a given that The Last of Us Part II was destined to sell well since this is an established IP from a AAA studio but it was also one of the most divisive games in recent years. Judging by these sales though, the risky narrative paid off.
