But not all as it seems in this serene, melancholy adventure from Frame Interactive.
Announced at the end of last year during The Game Awards 2025, the game stands out as a premier Good Boy simulator, emphasizing empathy and exploration over traditional gameplay.
In The Free Shepherd, you play as an energetic Border Collie who is focused on tracking down all his sheep. Though it begins as a seemingly simple fairytale, the game unfolds with unexpected mysteries that challenge perceptions and deepen the narrative.

The Steam description reads: “Run fast and free as a sheepdog in a beautiful but troubled world. Herd masses of lost sheep to a secret refuge. Discover a mysterious calamity that only you can stop.”
The world is hauntingly beautiful, its landscapes echoing with the silence of a vanished humanity. Your mission is to find the scattered sheep and guide them to safety across the bleak, windy vista that look like they were inspired by Iceland’s dramatic mountains and open fields, creating a peaceful yet visually striking environment. Wind in the grass, distant bleats, rain over stone. The terrain, sound, and lighting wrap you in a quiet spell as you search for your flock.
The Free Shepherd uses your Border Collie’s natural agility and intelligence to rally and steer large groups of sheep across open terrain.
Sprint, skid, swim, dig, bark, and bound across obstacles as you herd massive flocks and follow the trail toward the sheep you've sworn to protect.
This isn't an action-heavy title. Subtle fantastical forces reshape the world, turning puzzles, environments, and even the flock itself into surprises that deepen the journey. It focuses on the mood of a world in recovery, where the story is told through exploration and discovery rather than dialogue.
