The video game industry is in dire need of a solid new dinosaur game after a series of successive flops.
Both Code Violet and Tokyo Scramble launched earlier this year to abysmal reviews, hardly following in the footsteps of greats like Dino Crisis.
Jurassic Park Survival is a very promising new launch on the way, but it’s worrying that precisely nothing has been said since the game’s initial reveal in 2023.
Thankfully, UK-based indie studio Junkfish is swooping in to potentially save the day with its new survival horror Wilderdark.
This brand-new first-person game is due to launch on Steam later in 2026 and sees players explore a “perilous dinosaur-infested island”, according to a press release.

Players will find themselves upon an island that’s become overrun with an ectoparasitic organism that’s corrupted both dinosaurs and plant life.
You’re a field operative sent in “by a shadowy organisation in pursuit of immortality”, so the player is the bad guy, to an extent, which is an interesting twist.
It’s up to you to document the island’s ecosystem and uncover the fate of earlier expeditions; that includes finding out what happened to your parents.
Of course, doing all of this is no easy feat.
The fact that this is a survival horror proves that the odds will be stacked against you as even the smallest of sounds could attract the island’s deadly predators.
“The island is teeming with unfamiliar and dangerous lifeforms, including grotesque, parasite-infected dinosaurs,” devs teased.
“To uncover the truth, players will need to carefully observe their surroundings, document discoveries through photography, and craft essential tools from what they can find.
“It’s a constant balancing act: use resources widely, stay out of sight, and think one step ahead of the island's relentless hunters.”
Junkfish is no stranger to the realm of horror, having previously brought us Monstrum in 2015.
“We've been holding onto Wilderdark as a well-kept secret for over three years, and we're super excited to finally shine a spotlight on it,” said Ellie Gibbs, senior marketing manager at Junkfish.
“After years of quietly building it behind-the-scenes, it feels amazing to share something that marks our return to the kind of horror our community has been asking for.
“The demo is just the beginning...step in next week and see what's been lurking in the dark.”
Yes, Wilderdark is getting a demo which is set to land on Steam on 7 May, granting PC users an opportunity to get a small taste of this exciting dinosaur horror.
Hopefully, Wilderdark finally breaks the dino curse and is the Dino Crisis successor we’ve all been craving for years.
