Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will introduce a new combat companion for Cal Kestis, confirms developer Respawn Entertainment.

In 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal, the game's protagonist, was accompanied by the loveable droid BD-1. However, while BD-1 was very helpful regarding hacking, uncovering secrets and story progression, this droid wasn't best equipped for combat. To be fair, BD-1 could hack Imperial droids to fight on Cal’s behalf when a certain upgrade was implemented.

Take a look at the trailer for Star Wars: Jedi Survivor below.

We know that BD-1 will once more be at the side of Cal in the upcoming sequel and honestly, we wouldn't have it any other way. That being said, during an interview with IGN, it’s been revealed that Cal will have a combat companion in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Featured in a new system called 'Characters-in-Gameplay', Cal can be supported by an AI companion during missions. What’s more, we have already seen a glimpse of Cal’s combat companion in the game's reveal trailer. Cal’s trusty new friend is named Bode Akuna. Much like BD-1, Cal will be able to give commands to Bode such as performing attacks or utilising his abilities. I suppose you could say, if Bode proves to be a reliable AI companion in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, it bodes well for Cal’s survival chances in his fight against the empire.

“When you see a good opportunity, you can give Bode the signal to perform the attack, and he'll use his jetpack to ram the enemy with a brutal dropkick, and then he quickly follows it up by slamming down a shock grenade to stun other nearby enemies,” said narrative technical designer Joanna Robb.

Robb continued: “It's a great way to send a tough enemy flying, taking them out of the fight briefly, or you could run them down with a sprint attack to get a quick hit in.” What’s more, Robb teased that Bode will not be the only AI companion in the game. So presumably, Cal will meet new friends in the story each bringing their own set of skills. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if any of those companions will be popular characters from the Star Wars universe.

In related Star Wars Jedi: Survivor news, a terrifying new villain has been revealed for the upcoming sequel. What’s more, the developers have also teased a much larger world to explore than its predecessor.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will release on 28 April 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
