'Squid Game' Director Says His New Project Is Even More Violent

Hwang Dong-hyuk has teased his upcoming new project, Killing Old People Club - he said he might have to hide from old people when it's out.

If you asked anyone what last year’s biggest TV show was, I have very little doubt that they’d say Squid Game. The South Korean survival drama series absolutely exploded in popularity, quickly became Netflix’s most-watched show of all time, and changed everyone’s perception of the once innocent children’s game, Red Light Green Light, forever.

Now, as reported by Variety, the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has revealed that he’s working on a brand-new project. He’s teased that it’ll be “another controversial film”, and that “it will be more violent than Squid Game”. Intriguing!

Did you know that in Saudi Arabia, you can actually participate in a real-life Squid Game experience? Without the deadly penalties, of course. Check it out below.

At MIPTV, the director revealed that he’s already written a 25-page treatment for his upcoming movie, titled Killing Old People Club, which is apparently inspired by a novel written by Italian writer and philosopher Umberto Eco. He reportedly claimed that he might have to hide from old people when it comes out, so take that as you will.

Hwang also added that last month, he met Steven Spielberg during the AFI Awards, and received his greatest praise yet: “Steven Spielberg told me ‘I watched your whole show in three days and now I want to steal your brain,” he said. “It was like the biggest compliment I ever got in my life because he’s my film hero. I grew up watching his movies.”

As exciting as Hwang’s new project sounds, if you were just craving more Squid Game in your life, fear not, because that’s happening too. The director said that he’s now going to be heading home to South Korea to write the show’s second season, which he hopes will be streaming on Netflix by the end of 2024.

Last month, in an interview with Deadline, Hwang teased that “there will be more great games, that’s all I can say,” but also added that some dead characters may be set to make a comeback: “I’ll try something to bring them back to Season Two,” he said at the time. Clearly, it’ll be a while before we hear anything concrete about that, though, as the season is yet to be written.

It’s not known at this point when we can expect to see anything of Killing Old People Club, but be sure to hide your grandmas - who knows what Hwang is cooking up.
