It is hard to believe that the Spyro franchise first began almost three decades ago and it is even harder to believe that, despite this impressive time frame, fans have yet to receive a fourth mainline entry.
First released back in 1998 for the PlayStation, Spyro the Dragon took the whole gaming world by storm despite two caveats: the game was originally marketed towards younger children and its initial sales period was not the most successful.
However, over time, the platformer found large success and it is now considered as one of the best-selling PlayStation games of all time.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with PlayStation’s other former mascot Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon went on to receive two sequels: Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon in 1999 and 2000 respectively.

Despite the series receiving a remaster in 2018’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a fourth instalment is yet to emerge despite fans calling out for one.
With Spyro the Dragon celebrating its 27-year anniversary today, Twitter account ScreenTime shared the news and it seems as though fans were feeling nostalgic.
“Spyro was the best of its time,” user Metal wrote.
User Eser agreed, adding, “27-years of gliding, flaming, and gem collecting. Spyro defined a generation of platformers.”

Until now, any news of Spyro the Dragon 4 has been merely rumoured with speculation that Toys for Bob may be working on a new entry after its next project featured the tagline “hold your horns”.
However, that has not been confirmed and fans still live in hope that Spyro 4 will be announced one day.
That is definitely the case for one user over on r/Spyro.
“I’ve just ran through 100% of all three original games and damn, it still holds strong replay value in 2025,” they shared.

“When Spyro 4 does come out it’s a day-one purchase no question and I’m in my 30s now. Pure nostalgia and fun.”
Let us hope that fans such as this will finally get a fourth instalment of the beloved Spyro franchise in the future.
