Sons of the Forest, the awaited sequel to the previous survival horror title, is slowly but surely approaching its release. Up until this point, developer Endnight Games has kept its cards close to its chest, and this worked well with The Forest which wasn't all that it appeared to be.

A plane crash, an island populated by bloodthirsty mutants wearing very little, and survival mechanics. I could be describing a fair few games on Steam, but Endnight Games' command over the inimitable suspense and scares of The Forest secured a significant player base. Our first look at Sons of the Forest came at The Game Awards 2019 and since then, the game has been delayed twice. However, according to this deep dive into the survival horror, it sounds like the team has been as busy as beavers to deliver an impressive improvement on the popular game.

"In just scale, the world is around 4x the size of The Forest, but everything is more detailed this time, with more plant and tree variety, more log and stump types, and visually when you craft items, for example, a Molotov Cocktail, you actually see the player take some cloth and shove it into a bottle of vodka," said the team in an interview with games radar. "When you place a log on a wall or cut a floor apart you see the player actually do it. We wanted this to feel like the ultimate camping simulator meets a terrifying horror survival game."

There are also twists on the standard set of survival mechanics, and you've got a bit of a leg up this time round. Pun not intended. "We’ve introduced a 3D Printer this time, allowing players to print various items to help them survive," continued the team.

"We’ve tried to keep this realistic, so you can only print things you would in the real world. The player also starts with a personal handheld GPS which helps with navigating the much larger world. Additionally, this time, players have access to guns and more advanced explosives giving them even more ways of dealing with the island's inhabitants." Sons of the Forest comes to PC on 23 February.
