'Sonic The Hedgehog 2' Director Wants To Make A Smash Bros. Movie

The second movie in the Sonic The Hedgehog cinematic universe just released, and already director Jeff Fowler has his sights set on a new project. 

People have enjoyed Sonic The Hedgehog 2. In our review Mourad El-Dine Abdou praised it as “hilarious, full of action, brimming with references to the games, and undoubtedly better than the first film.” However, with the news of Jim Carrey’s potential retirement, and the confirmation that his Robotnik will never be replaced, people have questioned where the Sonic films will go next.

The voice of Sonic is a far bigger gamer than we thought. Find out what Sonic plays in our interview with Sonic The Hedgehog 2’s Ben Schwartz and James Marsden in the video below.

Fowler has some ideas up his sleeves though. In an interview with ComicBook, he expressed his desire to work on a film based on one of gaming’s largest ever crossovers; Super Smash Bros. 

"Nothing would make me happier than to just throw all the characters into a battle royale and do a big Smash Bros. thing. That would probably require some work from the lawyers before that could happen. Getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, I mean everyone would be kinda dying for that, right? That's just classic."

The speedy blue hedgehog made his first appearance in Nintendo’s iconic fighting series, in 2007’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, he was just out on loan from Sega and still very much remains separate from Nintendo itself. If a Super Smash Bros. movie were to happen it would be a licensing nightmare. Nintendo is well known to be very precious over its own IPs. Then there are all the other companies to bring into the loop. 

However, there is a new live-action Mario movie in the works, so who knows what the cinematic future could hold.
