'Sonic Origins' Locks Incredibly Basic Features Behind DLC Paywall

Gotta make money fast!

Yesterday (20 April) it was announced that a new collection of the Sega Mega Drive Sonic games including Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 And Knuckles, and Sonic CD, will be released under the name Sonic Origins.

While people are excited for new features, such as the ability to play as Tails and Knuckles even in the older titles, there are some new changes which fans of Sonic are not best pleased about. Alongside the announcement of the collection came an image detailing for five different editions and packs of the game which will be released, as well as features which will be included for those who purchase the pre-order. The image includes standard things such as future DLC and additional music tracks, however some of the features detailed feel like Sega are hiding basic features behind a paywall.

If you didn’t get the chance to check out the latest announcement yet, you can take a look at the trailer below.

You want to play with a letter-boxed background? Sorry, if you don’t pre-order, that will cost you extra. How about those delightful anime style animations which made Sonic Mania so delightful? Well those only come with the Premium Fun Pack or the Digital Deluxe Edition.

The developers have also added in hard mode for players, but again those will only be available for those who buy the two more expensive packages above. The feature which people are most concerned about however, is that camera controls for the new main menu island are to be locked behind this deluxe paywall.

While people often don’t mind paying extra for a little additional content, the removal of what should be standard features from the base game is concerning. While people praised the way Sonic Mania handled its DLC, it seems that Sega is now doing all it can to push people to buy the more expensive versions of the upcoming game.
